Taiwan's Weapons Against Coronavirus: An Epidemiologist as Vice President.
TAIPEI, Taiwan - The calls come at night, when Taiwan's vice president, Chen Chien-jin, is usually at home in his pajamas. Scientists seek his advice on the development of antiviral drugs. Health officials ask for guidance as they investigate an outbreak of coronovirus on a naval ship.
Like many world leaders, Mr. Chen is fighting to keep coronoviruses at bay and predicting the course of the epidemic. He is tracking infections, insisting on vaccines and test kits, and reminding the public to wash their hands.
But unlike most officials, Mr. Chen has spent his career preparing for the moment - he is a Johns Hopkins-trained epidemiologist and virus specialist.
That experience threw Mr. Chen from behind the curtain into the forefront of Taiwan's crisis response. He has adopted his rare dual role, using his political authority to criticize China initially for trying to hide the virus, as scientists also hunk at him to analyze trends in transmission.
